THE DOORS BOX SET is a four disc compilation of both new and old material. The first three discs consist mostly of demos, live and unreleased tracks, while the fourth disc features the band's hand-picked favorites from the band's previously released albums.

Though they've been out of commission for decades, The Doors have a continuing influence on the development of rock & roll, as this four disc set of mostly unreleased material reminds us. In the sixties, they provided a West Coast alternative to the decadent, urban visions of the Velvet Underground and the Stooges. Jim Morrison's position as rock Bacchus was the stuff of prime rock mythology, providing the blueprint for countless self-styled enfants terrible in the '70s. His Rimbaud-with-leather-pants lyrics were arguably a precedent-setter for the likes of punk grandparents Richard Hell and Patti Smith. The band's combination of psychedelic, jazz and classical influences created a unique musical tapestry.

Doors fans both rabid and casual will find plenty of reasons to be cheerful here. Live tracks, studio outtakes, and other rarities provide a unique glimpse into the legacy of a band whose fire burned out far too soon. It was September 1968, the venue was The Roundhouse in London's Chalk Farm, by far and away the best rock spot in the U.K., and the nearest thing to a genuine San Francisco Ballroom.
The sheer power of The Doors renditions of Light My Fire and When The Music's Over convinced all that were there that we were witnessing a piece of music history.
The power of that night can never truly be recalled, by luck or judgement, The Doors sets were filmed and the best appears herein. Doors - 1965-09-02 - Aura Studio Demos bootleg


This recording is often referred to as the first Doors recording, which is not technically true due to the absence of Robby Krieger. At this time, the band consisted of Jim Morrison (vocal), Ray Manzarek (piano), John Densmore (drums), Rick Manzarek (guitar), Jim Manzarek (harmonica), and a woman bass player whose identity remains undetermined. They set up and record all six songs in just three hours, and afterward press a few acetates for booking purposes.

Their studio time is obtained through a contractual exchange with Aura Records as a substitution for studio time for Rick and the Ravens, whose previous singles have not fared well. (It is interesting to note that The Doors never opted to record "Hello, I Love You" until their third album, and that was after Elektra president Jac Holzman's son remembered the song from this session and brought it to their attention.)

Around this time, Ray Manzarek's brothers express a growing uncertainity and dissatisfaction with the direction the group has taken and shortly thereafter decide to leave the band. However, Ray and Jim possess a strong vision of creating something musically that will be quite distinct from the ordinary fare of the day.

After the others have departed from the band, Manzarek quickly seeks to reconstruct it. John Densmore eagerly recommends his cohort Robby Krieger, from his Transcendental Meditation course, as a potential new guitarist. Shortly thereafter, Krieger displays his brilliance on slide guitar on "Moonlight Drive" during an audition, and the group immediately invites him to join. Manzarek's foresight and persistence bring the band members together, creating the foundation for the band.
