The little master from Chennai, AR Rahman has made India proud by winning the eagerly awaited Oscars for 'Best Original Score' and the 'Original Song Award' for Slumdog Millionaire .

Taking a bow at the coveted red carpet ceremony, Rahman's acceptance speech during the Best Original Song Award was a moving encore. "All my life I had two choices - between love and hate and I chose love," declared Rahman to an enamoured Hollywood audience.

Dedicating the trophy to his country, Rahman also sought his mother's blessings and love. Citing the famous line from the yesteryears Bollywood hit Deewar - Rahman stated 'Mere paas Ma hain,' (I have my mother with me), as he accepted the award for Best Original Score. Rahman's soulful rendition of his nominated track Jai Ho was a fitting declaration of his talent on an international platform.

Slumdog gets Rahman 3 Oscar nominations

A R Rahman did India proud once again as he bagged a triple nomination at the 81 st Oscar Academy Awards
for Slumdog Millionaire,
the rags to riches saga of an Indian boy from a Mumbai slum. Rahman was nominated in the Best Original Score category and twice in the Best Original Song section.

While Rahman shares the Original Song nomination “Jai Ho” with Gulzar, for “O Saya” he shares the nomination with Maya Arulpragasam.

Slumdog Millionaire, bagged 10 nominations in all including Best Motion Picture category, Best Director — Danny Boyle and Best Adapted Screenplay — Simon Beaufoy. Other nominations include Best Cinematography, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing and Best Film Editing.

The romantic fantasy "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" led Academy Awards contenders with 13 nominations, among them Best Motion Picture and acting honours for Brad Pitt and Taraji P. Henson, and a directing slot for David Fincher.

Other best-picture nominees are "Frost/Nixon," "Milk," and "The Reader".

As expected, Heath Ledger had a supporting-actor nomination for "The Dark Knight" on the first anniversary of his death from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs. But the Batman blockbuster was shut out for other top categories such as best picture and director.

Real-life couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will both go to the Oscars as nominees. Jolie had a best actress nomination for the missing-child drama "Changeling."

The acting categories were loaded with surprises. Kate Winslet won two Golden Globes — best dramatic actress for "Revolutionary Road" and supporting actress for "The Reader"— but she was nominated for lead actress at the Oscars for "The Reader" and shut out for "Revolutionary Road."

Actors considered long shots also sneaked in, among lead-actor nominee Richard Jenkins for "The Visitor," best-actress contender Melissa Leo for "Frozen River" and supporting-actor pick Michael Shannon for "Revolutionary Road."

Winslet reunited with "Titanic" co-star Leonardo DiCaprio for "Revolutionary Road," but he also was shut out for a nomination on that film.

Other best-actress nominees were Anne Hathaway for "Rachel Getting Married" and Meryl Streep for "Doubt."

Joining Pitt and Jenkins in the best-actor category were Frank Langella, "Frost/Nixon"; Sean Penn, "Milk"; and Mickey Rourke, "The Wrestler."

But perhaps the biggest surprise overall was the so-so results for "The Dark Knight," which had been picking up momentum as one Hollywood trade guild after another picked it as one of the year's best films.

The largest blockbuster in years, "The Dark Knight" had eight nominations, but other than Ledger's honour, it scored only in technical categories such as cinematography, visual effects and editing.

Rahman feels on top of the world after Oscar nominations

Soaking in triple Oscar nomination glory, Music maestro A R Rahman on Thursday said he felt on "top of the world" and disclosed that he
was getting offers from Hollywood producers to provide the musical score for their films.

Rahman did not give details of the nature of offers beyond saying Hollywood producers have been making several telephone calls to him since his musical score for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ won the Golden Globe award.

Pressed by newsmen about the offers, Rahman said he cannot reveal anything due to confidentialities involved but would talk about it at an appropriate time.

Asked by newsmen whether the Indian film industry would lose him to Hollywood, Rahman quipped, " I will do a balancing act."

The music wizard said representing India at the Oscar nomination was a great energy booster.

"I did not think it will get there. God has been really kind. And I have to really thank the prayers of all the people and their good wishes," Rahman said.

"Something good is happening and I am really happy about it," he said, adding there is a kind of optimism in the film and so much of positive vibes as you leave the movie hall."

Rahman makes India proud by earning Oscar nominations

After becoming the first Indian to win the Golden Globe, music maestro Allah Rakha Rahman added yet another feather in his cap
blazing a new trail getting a triple Oscar nomination in two categories, an unprecedented feat for any Indian.

The 43-year-old music wizard, nicknamed 'Mozart of Madras', who has enthralled audience in the country and abroad with his heartwarming symphonies finally got his due recognition on the international stage with his composition in the movie 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

Rahman, born in Chennai on January 6, 1966, was nominated in the Best Original Score and Best Original Song categories for two of his compositions -- 'Jai Ho' and 'O Saya'.

Born as a Hindu, he changed his name to Allah Rakha Rahman from S Dileep Kumar after his family converted to Islam in 1970s.

The music genius first came to limelight with his music for a Bombay Dyeing ad in 1980s which became very popular.

In 1992, he was approached by film director Mani Ratnam to compose the score and soundtrack for his Tamil film 'Roja'.

The music of the film was a refreshing change from the run-of-the-mill renditions and gave Rahman his maiden Best Music Director trophy at the National Film Awards, the first time ever by a debutante film composer.

Rahman entered the Hindi film industry with 'Rangeela', directed by Ram Gopal Varma. The music of the film became a rage and the genius continued to give some brilliant compositions for films such as 'Bombay', 'Dil Se', 'Taal', 'Lagaan' and 'Rang De Basanti', among others.

What made Rahman's music click with the listeners was the refreshing use of percussions, sound and melody, most of which were inspired from the Indian folk music.

His 1998 superhit composition 'Chaiyya Chaiyya', which was deeply rooted in Sufi mysticism, became a rage among Indians and is still considered one of the best compositions of the musician.

Rahman gradually became a known face on the international platform and in 1999 he performed with king of pop, Michael Jackson in Munich for 'Michael Jackson and Friends Concert'.

In 2002, he gave the music for his maiden stage production 'Bombay Dreams' directed by legendary musical theater composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber. Rahman's music was also a hit from London's 'West End' to New York's 'Broadway'.

In 2004, with Finnish folk music band 'Varttina', he composed the music for 'The Lord of the Rings' theater production.

Rahman's composition 'Jai Ho' for British director Danny Boyle's 'Slumdog Millionaire', earned him the Critics Choice Award for Best Composer in 2008 and the Golden Globe in the category of Best Original Score.

A four-time National Award winner, Rahman was honoured with the Padma Shri and received six awards at the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, besides 11 awards for his scores at the Filmfare and Filmfare Awards South each.

In 2006, he received an honourary award from Stanford University for his contributions to global music. In 1995, he also received the Mauritius National Award and a Malaysian Award.

The music director, who is known for his humble demeanor, gave a new definition to patriotism with his modern rendition of 'Vande Mataram'. His latest tract 'Jiya Se Jiya' is another attempt to send the message of peace and love through music.

In 2008, he scored soundtracks for 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na,' 'Yuvvraaj,' 'Ghajini,' and 'Slumdog Millionaire' and will continue to rule million hearts with his music for the upcoming films such as 'Dilli 6' and 'Blue'
