The book of Dzur By Steven Brust
    Publisher: Tor Books
    Date: 2011-10-11
    Format: epub,lit,rtf,mobi,pdf,html,lrf,txt
    Language: English
    Pages: 352
    Size: 4.6 MB

Dzur_ is about two-thirds of a Vlad novel. It's got a lot of fabulous dialogue, some sumptuous descriptive writing, and the welcome return of some old friends. What it doesn't have is much in the way of plot.

I was really looking forward to this one. Vlad used to be a small cog in the big machine of Adrilankha. Then he was a desperate refugee. Now he's back in Adrilankha, but no longer as a bit player. Now, he's a power to be reckoned with.

But _Dzur_ doesn't really show much of a change in Vlad, in Adrilankha, or in the relationship between them. Brust could have set the tale in Vlad's early life, before his exile, without many alterations. It's as though Brust, having made Vlad into a big cheese, is trying to explain it all away so that he doesn't have to tell a different kind of story.

Furthermore, having set up the conflict in the opening chapter, Brust follows with a surprisingly low-key plot. Vlad walks around and talks to people a lot. There's only one bit of action, which lasts about a page. The emotional intensity is very low (something that could have been different if Cawti had any major role to play; she appears, vanishes, and comes back for a brief epilogue). And Vlad's ultimate solution to his problem is something he really could have done around chapter 3. All that walking and talking in the middle of the book contributes very little to the end.

    Language: English
    Pages: 304

    Product Description:

Fresh from the collapse of his marriage, and with the criminal Jhereg organization out to eliminate him, Vlad decides to hide out among his relatives in faraway Fenario. All he knows about them is that their family name is Merss and that they live in a papermaking industrial town called Burz.

At first Burz isn’t such a bad place, though the paper mill reeks to high heaven. But the longer he stays there, the stranger it becomes. No one will tell him where to find his relatives. Even stranger, when he mentions the name Merss, people think he’s threatening them. The witches’ coven that every Fenarian town and city should have is nowhere in evidence. And the Guild, which should be protecting the city’s craftsmen and traders, is an oppressive, all-powerful organization, into which no tradesman would ever be admitted.

Then a terrible thing happens. In its wake, far from Draegara, without his usual organization working for him, Vlad is going to have to do his sleuthing amidst an alien people: his own.

Phoenix: A fantasy By Steven Brust
    Publisher: Ace
    Date: 2004
    Format: epub,lit,rtf,mobi,pdf,html,lrf,txt
    Language: English
    Size: 5. MB

In Steven Brust's sixth novel of the Vlad Taltos series, our "hero" (Vlad Taltos) attempts to come to terms with his role as an assassin, his "racism" and his job as a crime-lord. Vlad begins to realize that, perhaps, what he does for a living is wrong. He then confronts his weaknesses head on. Add to this the fact that everyone in the book is trying to kill him and you are in for the ride of your life.

If you want to try something new and you are tired of all the J.R.R. Tolkien clones that make up epic fantasy today, give Steven Brust and the Vlad Taltos novels a shot. This is irreverent "epic" fantasy. And thank goodness for it.

Note: I would start with the first Vlad Taltos novel, Taltos, and continue with Dragon, Yendi, Jhereg, Teckla, Phoenix, Athyra and Orca. That wasn't the order they were written in but it's the order in which they take place.

Product Description: The new two-in-one omnibus featuring two classic novels of Vlad Taltos and his winged jhereg companions-Athyra and Orca.

In Athyra, Vlad finds he's ready to retire himself and his jhereg companions, but the biggest hitters of the House of the Jhereg have something else in mind. In Orca, Vlad must repay a debt to a boy who saved his life-even if it means breaking a scandal big enough to bring down the House of the Orca, and possibly the entire Empire.

    Language: English
    Pages: 416

    Product Description:

With his bestselling novel The Phoenix Guards, Steven Brust took readers to a time a thousand years before the events of his popular Vlad Taltos novels. Its sequel, Five Hundred Years After, was hailed by Science Fiction Chronicle as the best fantasy novel of the year.

Now Brust has returned to the Khaavren epic, first with last year's The Paths of the Dead, and now with its direct continuation, The Lord of Castle Black...a novel that gives Vlad Taltos and Khaavren fans alike a new look at one of Brust's most popular characters, the Dragonlord Morrolan.

Along the way, we'll also encounter swordplay, intrigues, quests, battles, romance, snappy dialogue, and the missing heir to the Imperial Throne. It's an old-fashioned adventure, moving at a twenty-first-century pace.

    Iorich By Steven Brust
    Publisher: Tor Books

I will give special appreciation to the chapter intros, which here consist of depositions, memos, and minutes of an investigation into the civilian massacre. Almost all of them are interesting, a few are amusing, and one (Aliera's) is hilarious. Brust also continues to impress in how he's handled the huge Plot Device of Invincibility introduced at the end of Issola to avoid making Vlad boringly immune to real danger or difficulty.

I'd like to say that the events of this book and the especially the state of play at the end sets us up for a big change of story arc or at least gut punching development ala Phoenix or Issola, but we've been suckered by that before. I do have hope the next book will continue the chronological arc forward; the recent pattern is two steps forward, one step jumping back. Jhegaala was the most recent flashback, and Iorich only gave us a few hints at what happened the last four years since Dzur, so I think we'll get one more forward push of the story line before Brust jumps back to cover the Dzur-Iorich interval.

Friday Night in Beast House: Includes the Bonus Novella the Wilds By Richard Laymon
    Publisher: Leisure Books
    Date: 2010-02-23
    Format: pdf,mobi,epub,lit,rtf
    Language: English
    Pages: 238
    Size: 1.0 MB

Mustering up his courage he finally asks her out; she accepts on the stipulation that he spend FRIDAY NIGHT IN BEAST HOUSE after it closes. Excited he agrees to meet her stipulation hoping this is the ticket to ecstasy even though he knows the day time tourist attraction has been the sight of several ghastly homicides.

On Friday night Mark breaks into Beast House. He proceeds to hide in the Beast Hole hoping to quietly pass time and emerge as a hero in the eyes of Alison. However, Beast House earned its reputation for grisly inexplicable murders and soon Mark and Alison will learn even wet fantasies can turn nightmarish in the wrong environs.

Richard Laymon's final Beast House tale is a terrific entry in a great series that like it predecessors (see THE CELLAR, THE BEAST HOUSE and THE MIDNIGHT TOUR) hooks the audience into a complacency that slowly turns into tension and suspense wondering what will happen next to Mark. The delightful protagonist slowly realizes how much trouble he is in as he learns the truth about Beast House. Not quite at the emotional roller coaster levels of the previous three novels; this tale is a tense gripping thriller that will have readers searching for the previous books.

This is truly a wonderful story , But I was unsure of getting the cd over the audio tapes. I noticed that the tapes had the Unabridged version and the Cd version did not say if it was or not on all parts, so i took a chance and got the Cd version of each book. Thankfully the Cd version Is also Unabridged. So for those of you out there like me who might have been confused between the tapes and the Cd now you know they are the same.

The Hobbit: or, There and Back Again By J. R. R. Tolkien

    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Ltd
    Date: 2002
    Format: pdf,mobi,epub
    Language: English
    Pages: 304
    Size: 12.7 MB

In a mythical or maybe just forgotten time, many creatures lived in places like the Shire, home to Bilbo Baggins, Hobbit. Hobbits are comfort loving creatures with no real sense for adventure. A knock on the door and Bilbo's life is about to change.

Calling this book children's book is like calling "Alice in Wonderland" [see "The Annotated Alice"] a children's book. Yes children can read this book and it is fun. However, there is a lot more to this book than a cute story. Moreover, it has all the depth of the other Tolkien works with the exception of being shorter.

Many people look at this story as a prequel to "The Lord of the Rings", where in reality it is a stand-alone story with a perfectly good beginning, middle, and end. When you read "The Lord of the Rings", there is enough description to forgo "The Hobbit." Personally, I find that reading The Lord of the Rings first gave me the in-depth background to better appreciate The Hobbit.

Many of the creatures and adventures will put you on the edge of your seat. You will recognize the personalities and grow along will Bilbo as he faces new challenges as he learns to deal with life.

A good book to read first would be "The Power of Myth" by Joseph Campbell. Then you get a clearer picture of why the story progresses as it does.

Gilded Latten Bones By Glen Cook
    Publisher: Roc
    Date: 2010
    Format: pdf,html,rtf,epub,lit,lrf,mobi
    Language: English
    Pages: 368
    Size: 4.1 MB

    WARNING...!!! SOME SPOILERS!!!

Since I first found "Sweet Silver Blues" over twenty years ago, I have fallen for Garrett, P.I. The alternate universe settings of supernaturally surrounded hard-boiled detectives have come a long way. We have Jim Butcher's excellent urban wizard, Harry Dresden; we have Simon R. Green's really cool John Taylor and his truly weird and creepy, Nightside; and another favorite of mine, P. N. Elrod's great vampire P.I., Jack Fleming. I adore all of these. But, Glen Cook and Garrett got me started on this genre and I am forever glad. The latest Garrett adventure has, however, undertones of so many loose ends being tidied up that is has a tint of "end of series". Maybe not. Maybe Garrett's hot and cold love-life with his stormy red-head, the deathly attack on his best friend, and the more than hints of a real law and order society that would make a loose canon such as Garrett unnecessary, are not indications of the winding up of a great adventure. Gilded Latten Bones certainly brings the ghastly secrets of TunFaire's society into powerful and violent confrontations with Garrett and most all of his friends, employees (?), lovers (?) and enemies, and doesn't really have to mean a summing up, a finale. To anyone who has read all, or any, of the previous Garrett, P. I. novels, this is, I think, one of the best. Maybe Garrett has grown (up?), but he is still loyal, confused, loving, and brave for all the right people and all the right reasons. This is one reader who is already waiting for the next great adventure. Hopefully, soon. (One final note: I don't know who his cover artist is, but I believe the same one has been creating the clever and striking covers since Sweet Silver Blues. Excellent covers. They really interpret Garrett's reality.)
