Skirts catch the fancy of city girls, but elders frown

    TARAN AND POOJA JAIN

LUDHIANA, JUNE 10: Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta have made skirts a hot property once again, wearing pretty floral, printed ones in various Bollywood flicks. In the metros of the country too, girls may be donning this beautiful garment here there and everywhere, but Ludhiana girls rue that they have no such luck. When it comes to wearing this garment of many avataars — long, short, floral, flowing, straight or crinkled, there is a big frown on the faces of city elders.

So even as trendy shops in the city display beautiful patterns of this interesting garment, young girls say they can do little except looking at them longingly, or at the most, wear them in the safe environs of their homes or private parties.

‘‘You go to any place around this world, girls are wearing all kinds of skirts, but not in our city,’’ rues Shruti, a final year student on one of the local colleges. She admits that she wants to wear skirts to her college but can not do so because elders will frown upon it, and boys will pass comments.

‘‘It is so embarrassing, the way the boys go mad hooting and whistling if you wear a skirt,’’ says a college student who wore one to her co-education college, and says she never dared again.

Reena Sodhi of the fashion shop, Fragrance, agrees that any new fashion is promptly picked up by Ludhiana girls. ‘‘After all, fashion does capture young hearts. Our city’s girls too are just crazy for skirts and their different styles, but they are unable to wear them freely,’’ she points out.

The reasons, she says, range from the city’s culture, or fear of disapproval of parents and others around. Asha Mehta, who has two daughters, also asserts that girls should not wear skirts and short tops, as its against the ‘‘ethics of the society’’.

Shops, though, will stock all kinds — crinkled, fish cuts, denims, Rajasthani skirts and even matching tops. Paramjit Singh of Amar Collection feels that skirts have really hit the market and that girls are increasingly buying them too. The price ranges between Rs 150 to 500, and at the more upmarket trends, even more.

A boutique owner highlights that Ludhiana girls too buy skirts in dozens. ‘‘But most wear skirts only in parties, or when they go out of town,’’ she says. Rachna, a KCW student, says she loves to wear skirts, but flaunts them only on outstation trips. ‘‘It is with the permission of my parents, of course, who do not want me to wear this dress here in this town, where people still have a mindblock against this garment,’’ she tells you. Rachna says she last wore a skirt at Delhi, and is looking forward to wearing them more often.

Mallika offered to pose for Playboy
By IndiaFM News Bureau, June 11th, 2004 - 1200 hrs IST

You thought you have seen enough of her. But there is more to go! The oomph of the sizzling Bollywood seductress Mallika Sherawat is so widespread that she has been offered to pose for the center spread of the illustrious Playboy magazine. This is for the first time that an Indian actress is being considered to feature in the Playboy magazine, which till date has featured only blonde females.

While the actress was unavailable for comment, her publicist Parul stated that going by Mallika's sexy image she might consider the offer but then again going by her traditional Indian upbringing, she is most likely to reject it.

Shaadi se Pehle Honeymoon for Mallika

By IndiaFM News Bureau, June 11th, 2004 - 0930 hrs IST

We were invited for a cursory glimpse of the songs from Perry Pictures' Kis Kis Ki Kismat.

The three songs, which were screened, were 'Azaadi', 'Shaadi Se Pehle Honeymoon' and 'Main Hoon Ladki'. The combination of Mallika's oomph and the musical sequence is amazing. The dream sequence song 'Shaadi Se Pehle Honeymoon' is a visual treat and one of the verses features Mallika in a dusky Arabic look (blue costume) while the song 'Main Hoon Ladki' features Mallika in a Marilyn Monroe get up.

Produced by Vivek Nayak and directed by Govind Menon, the movie based on scandals, gossip and pots of easy money is expected for release in August or September this year.

    Bolly babes love being undressed
    DHIMAN CHATTOPADHYAY

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ THURSDAY, JUNE 10, 2004 01:16:32 PM ]

It’s the ultimate male fantasy — making love to that seductive bombshell with a heavenly body. But what do these hot babes one fantasises about, think about being on every man’s mind when he goes to bed? Is it the ultimate thrill or an unnerving thought?

Sizzling Mallika Sherawat says she loves the adulation and the "I wish I could..." look she gets everytime the neckline plunges a little further. For her "it’s a great thrill" to be so popular with young men! "I love it. This is what I’ve been working for as an actress," she says. The hot Bong babe in town, Riya Sen, agrees. "I am pretty proud of the fact that I am one! Not everyone can be hot even if they want to," she says.

Sultry Bipasha Basu says, "I don’t think I am every man’s fantasy...am I?" On the other hand, Celina Jaitely is philosophical. "This unexpected title came as a big surprise," says the bikini babe from Janasheen . "But I think every woman should be proud of her sexuality. It’s a God-given advantage."

Item specialist Yana Gupta is "comfortable with a sex symbol tag," since "in our business we are there to create a fantasy world for people to live in. And if men fantasise about me, it’s just fine with me.’ Neha Dhupia, who rose from the sea Bo Derek-style in Qayamat , sums it up when she says, "Wow! It’ll be real cool to be remembered as a sex siren with a hot bod."

One wonders though, whether deep inside, they worry about growing old and losing that sex symbol tag one day. "I live for today. The best way is to age gracefully," analyses Celina. Yana too is not worried. "Maybe I will miss being talked about and dreamt about, but I am sure I will be mature enough to deal with it," she says. Bipasha though has the final word: "I think ageing gracefully is very sexy. So let’s hope that I’m sexy till I am 100, complete with sexy wrinkles and all".

Who are these 'good girls'?Add to Clippings
    ADITI PRASAD

Today, call girls seem to be a product of the Victorian age finishing school. They are beautiful, classy, well-educated, English speaking and have impeccable table manners.

Most of these 'good girls' in the sex trade are between the age group of 18 and 35 and know that the 'exit route' is open for them. For some if the dire need for money seems to be the reason, for others it's just a path to the luxuries of life.

Kajal, a 32 year old widow, owns a flat in one of the posh locality of the Capital and enjoys a lavish life. "I'm a graduate, got married, had a baby, husband expired, needed money and therefore got into this trade," she says. Her parents are very well-off but she does not want to take money from them.

"We live in a good neighbourhood and have good neighbours. But they don't know what we do. Our clients never come home. So there are no problems," Kajal adds.

But Kajal admits, "The only thing is that some of the clients start behaving very brutally - almost like animals. Then it is difficult. But it's tough to make them understand because they feel they have paid and should extract every pound of the flesh."

However, Kajal plans to quit soon. She says that she only entertains certain old clients now. "They have become good friends over the years. One of them (from Sri Lanka) is offering me a partnership in an international food joint venture."

Payal has a different story to tell. She has been into this profession for quite sometime and it's a mode for access to 'easy money'.

"I'm pursuing my graduation via correspondence. I am interested in modelling and I met some people, who initiated me into this trade," says Payal.

Today, Payal is earning good money and living a 'complete' life. But things don't end here. "I plan to get married once I finish graduation. And then, of course, I will leave all this."

Payal, Kajal, Tanya and Pallavi ... all are girls from good backgrounds, driving big cars, living in their own plush apartments, and leading a life of sheer luxury.

But they are not the only ones. College girls in need of pocket money, upcoming models and even Bollywood starlets are paid an obscene amount of money for an hour or two of their services. All are in want of 'fast and big' money.

"The best business that I've done till date is drawing a whooping Rs 2 lakh for a half-an-hour session, from a British client," says Aryan, who is into this trade from the past three years. The escort in question was a top celebrity model.

Speak to pimps in the trade and they will shoot off list of names - among the who's who of the society pages - of high profile models and Bollywood film star and starlets. "The big names charge as much as 18 lakhs for two to three hours," points out the 27-year-old Aryan.

Websites put up messages to lure and entice girls to join the sex trade.

"What stands us apart from other agencies is that we safeguard the interest of our companions as much as we care for our clients. We also do a pre-screening of every client and hence, cater to a discriminate, up-scale clientele. We offer you absolute discretion and expect the same in return," says one.

The 'managers' in unison say that girls have been approaching them from all over the country. "While in Delhi, the main crowd lands up from Mumbai and Chandigarh, Punjab, Gujarat and Rajasthan, girls from Bangalore are also in demand. Then, of course, there are girls from Delhi too," sources in the trade say.

And how do these girls sign up with pimps? "Sometimes the girls call us through our various contacts. Then, of course, they need to give references. Sometimes they just email us through our websites. We tell them that 'If meeting people and entertaining them is your forte... Why not get paid for something you do so naturally and so well?'

The other hot trend among call girls is nationality. With foreigners giving Indian models and actors a run for their money, foreign prostitutes seem within reach for Indians, albeit at a higher price.

Recently, Delhi police arrested 20 'imported' girls who were 'escorts'. According to police officials, "These women are passed off by pimps as German, Russian and Spanish and the money changes with the nationality."

"These girls are mostly from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan and other nations of former Soviet Union grappling with poverty and backwardness," informs Sudhir Yadav of the Delhi Crime Branch.

Russian girls come to town on tourist visas of 29 days on the pretext of business. On the face of it they carry pets and other electronic gadgets with them into Delhi and go back mostly with garments and other consumer durables. In Delhi, they mostly stay in hotels in Karol Bagh and Paharganj and operate out of there.

"They are poor girls and the idea of $5,000 a month is difficult to resist. While the madam or the pimp charges much more for the clients, the spill over money is pocketed by the madams," informs Yadav.

Madhoo not into Love, Sex, Etc

By IndiaFM News Bureau, June 28th, 2004 - 1400 hrs IST

Just recently we had informed you that actress Madhoo is making her comeback in Bollywood through a supposedly sleazy film titled Love, Sex, Etc. For an actress who made her start with films like Phool Aur Kaante and Roja, her comeback in a skin flick (as the trailers of the movie suggest) did come in as a bit of surprise. Moreover Madhoo is the only identifiable name in the cast of the film, which also includes some first-time names like Sandhya Shetty, Seema Mishra, Debu Bhatacharya, Vishal Vatwani, Rishi Khurrana and is directed by debutante Kallol Sen.

Well it seems as if Madhoo too realized the fact that the film was not shaping the way it was planned and has dissociated her name from it. The actress was told by the filmmakers that the film was based on urban sexuality and was targeted at an international audience. But subsequently Madhoo seemed to have comprehended that the film was anything but decent. The point also comes forth through the fact that the makers changed the title of the film from Kabhi Socha Bhi Na Tha to a more suggestive one like Love, Sex, Etc to make it commercially more viable.

    Dino bays for Bipasha's 'Rakht'
    By Meenakshi Sinha in Mumbai
    Friday, 25 June , 2004, 11:03

Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea's love story is well and truly over. The pair, who began by snuggling each other in 'Raaz', has now come to blows with Mahesh Manjrekar's 'Rakht'.

The Bengali bombshell finds it strange to be fighting a man she once romanced, at least on screen. "It's kind of surreal that Dino and I are pitted against each other in 'Rakht'. We are definitely not in love this time around. In fact I'm supposed to be frightened of him and he gets lots of chances to shake me up and do other things to scare the living daylights out of me," she says.

'Rakht' is Manjrekar's biggest directorial venture so far and is produced under the banner of Suniel Shetty's Popcorn Motion Pictures Pvt. Ltd. in association with brewery industry king Vijay Mallya. The film has a powerhouse starcast, including Suniel Shetty, Sanjay Dutt, Dino Morea, Himanshu Malik, Rajat Bedi and Sharat Saxena.

‘Nafisa was simply unlucky in love'

    Namrata Sharma Zakaria
Posted online: Saturday, July 31, 2004 at 1155 hours IST

Mumbai, July 31: Mumbai, and the rest of the country, is reeling in shock at the death of model and TV hostess Nafisa Joseph. Yes, she was young and beautiful and is gone too soon. But the real tragedy lies in the fact that Nafisa, unlike most suicide cases, wasn’t a ‘‘loser’’. She was simply unlucky in love.

Nafisa was a Bangalore girl who moved to Mumbai for its arclights. And sure enough, she shone through them. In her hometown, she went to the reputed Bishop Cotton School and was even school captain. At yet another reputed institution, St Joseph’s College, she proved to be bright and talented too.

A tall, lithe and strikingly beautiful girl, it came as no surprise when she started working with one of the country’s top model makers, Bangalore-based choreographer Prasad Bidapa, as early as 14 years old. She did several shows with Bidapa, and until she took her life on Thursday, she had maintained a friendship with him.

In 1997, Nafisa took part in the Miss India contest and won. In the first round itself, she was a clear favourite. Her poise and personality had the makings of a winner. And even though she didn’t win the Miss Universe pageant, she had a successful inning waiting for her at home.

I would suggest you first learn about a thing then make a comment. And for information my sister is a Professional model and she is mother of one children wholead more normal life than you lead.

Open your eyes and may be you will be able see things normally (I hope).

    Kiss and tale of Bollywood

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ SUNDAY, JULY 25, 2004 02:49:42 PM
    ]

The proverbial casting couch has — once again — reared
its ugly head. The catch is that Bollywood's
interpretation of the casting couch has changed to
    that of mutual consent.

"Everybody is open about everything," says Bipasha
Basu, "But nobody can take you for a ride unless you
    want them to. It's all a give-and-take
    relationship."Adds model-turned-actor Shawar Ali,
"Those who are desperate to make it big resort to such
    methods."

Trade analyst Indu Mirani, who's been a witness to
this couch trip for the last 20 years, says it's not
always exploitation. "It's been there for years. Every
second girl is willing to strip before the camera.
Nobody is taking advantage. And it happens in every
field." Similarly, trade analyst Taran Adarsh says,
"Which industry doesn't have the casting couch?"

According to an aspiring actor, speaking on the
condition of anonymity, "I'm an NSD passout and
looking for work in Mumbai. It's accepted that you get
a role only if you sleep around. Just last week, I was
propositioned by the assistant of a famous director. I
was offered a role subject to my fulfiling three
sexual acts described to me in graphic detail. When I
refused, the role that was 'just right for me' became
'come later'. There's hardly a break with no strings
    attached."

The new mantra is 'you scratch my back and I scratch
yours', right? Wrong, says Ishaa Koppikar. "Naivete
and vulnerability still exist. But then it all depends
on individual moral scruples and priorities." That,
    perhaps, is the crux.

Says Bobby Pushkarna, producer of Page 3 and a friend
of Bhandarkar,"While Madhur and I were scouting talent
for Page 3, girls in the skimpiest of clothes were
willing to do anything for a role."

Page 3 actress Tara Sharma says, "Working with Madhur
was a nice experience. I never sensed any unpleasant
vibes." Adds Sandhya Mridul, another Page 3actress,
"My experience of working with Madhur has been 10 on
    10. There was no discomfort ever. As a director, he
gives his actors leeway. I had a comfortable shoot."

Nonetheless, Mridul concedes that the casting couch
exists... "but taali do haath se bajti hai. One has to
be willing to jump onto that couch.
