Flesh trade racket ‘flourishing’ in residential areas
    Tribune News Service

    Yamunanagar, December 21
The arrest of two women allegedly involved in the flesh trade Kalyan Nagar five four days ago and three girls from Kalindi Colony here last month has highlighted the complaints of several people (with the police) that flesh trade is ‘flourishing’ in some of the residential colonies of the district.

Some of the guesthouses and motels located in the twin townships of Jagadhri and Yamunanagar have also become centre of flesh trade. The Guesthouse or motel owners are said to be providing rooms for anything between Rs 100 and Rs 150 and even ‘arranging’ girls for the customers.

Pimps are bringing girls here from UP, Himachal Pardesh and even from West Bengal and Assam.

It is alleged that prostitution is going on unchecked in parts of ward No. 4, 32 and 23. Residents of the area have reportedly complained to the police on several occasions but the police, it is alleged had acted only in few cases.

Migrant labourers are also involved in the flesh trade. “These migrant women charge anything between Rs 50 and Rs 200. They mostly target truck drivers and migrant labourers”, said a police official. About 50,000 migrant labourers are working here in different factories.

The proximity of the district with UP and Himachal Pardesh is also one of the reasons for the thriving flesh trade. A police official told The Tribune that girls were being frequently brought here from Himachal Pardesh and Uttar Pardesh and vice-versa.

The three girls who were arrested allegedly for being involved in flesh trade from Kalindi Colony last month belonged to Muradabad, UP.

Another alarming fact that has come to light during surveys conducted by different agencies and during police interrogation of girls involved in immoral trafficking was unsafe sex. It is said that the ‘customers’ are not interested in using condoms.

    Harbhajan to marry Punjabi girl

    Jalandhar, January 6
Punjabi girls now have a reason to smile. Finally, the Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh today categorically rejected the reports with regard to his proposed marriage with Bangalore based girl Priya Reddy and said that he would only tie nuptial knot with a Punjabi girl.

“The report published in a section of press about me getting married with final year psychology student at Bishop Cotton is totally baseless and devoid of the facts. I am not going to marry her. Definitely, I know her very much even as she is just a good friend. But, it does not mean I will marry her,” Turbanator, maintained.

“I came to know about the report when my close friends and family members rang me up to congratulate over my marriage plans. Although I know Priya very well and even went along with her for outings, but it does not mean that I am going to marry her,” he asserted.

“Even my parent scolded me for my reported decision of marriage, which I never took and it was only after my assurance to them to abide by their decision about my marriage, they calmed down,”he added.

Asked about his marriage plans, Bhajji said that he would take decision on the issue only after a couple of years. It will be an arranged marriage and bride, a Punjabi girl, would be selected only by my family members.

    Jesse pooh-poohs nudity in films
    Tribune News Service

    Chandigarh, January 6
Punjab’s very own Jesse Randhwa was in town today to sip some coffee at the newly-launched Golfer’s Café and Kitchen in Sector 35. Quite vocal about her food preferences, the model made herself comfortable at the café after ordering some Irish Iceberg coffee, which she sipped for a long time as questions kept pouring in from several quarters.

“Acting is not my cup of tea,” said the quintessential model who seemed quite peeved at the current Bollywood trends which have made stars of “nude” models. “Success comes to those models who are ready to expose. I can never be one. So I have been refusing many offers. I just have two films to my credit - “Gulaal” and “Chot”,” said Jesse, who has been into modelling for over a decade now.

Short-lived though, modelling as a career can be quite gratifying, at least Jesse believes so. “People have been accepting me for 10 years now. Also work is much more fun now because the shows are more professional than before, so are the costume trends. Personally, I love the designs and flamboyance of Sabyasachee and Saheb Dorjee,” she said.

Refraining from the glare of the big screen has not been as tough for Jesse as refusing small screen roles have been. “There have been hosts of offers from television serials, but not the kind that would inspire the actress in me. I am most comfortable modelling.” Entering the fashion realm with a bang after being declared the Miss India finalist in the year that saw Sushmita Sen being crowned the queen, Jesse Randhawa has been taking her profession rather seriously. And no, love for food has not quite interrupted her flight to success because she eats healthy, and never starve herself.

Girl ‘sold’ by husband rescued from rapists
    Sunit Dhawan
    Tribune News Service

    Hisar, January 6
A 22-year-old girl of the Surya Nagar area in the city was allegedly gangraped by some persons of Badsi village, near Hansi, to whom she had been “sold” by her husband. The victim was not only sexually abused, but also forced to work as a slave and was mercilessly beaten up on several occasions.

The girl, accompanied by her mother, Devi, narrated her horrific tale to this correspondent here today. The girl’s father, Kushal, had died some time ago. Since then, her uncle, Subhash, had been looking after the girl and her mother.

After the death of her husband, Devi has been working as a domestic help. She, with the help of Subhash, married her daughter to Om Prakash Sharma of the 12-Quarter area in the city. However, about three months after their marriage, Sharma allegedly took her to Badsi village and ‘sold’ her for Rs 30,000 to Krishan and Ram Chander through Pala.

The girl alleged that Krishan and Ram Chander kept her in their custody and raped her.The girl, who was in tears, alleged that she was also forced to work as a slave and beaten up on several occasions. On being asked why did she not try to escape, she said she always remained under a strict vigil. She alleged that she was repeatedly raped by the accused. The hapless girl said she was threatened with dire consequences in case she raised the alarm.

Devi said when she came to know of the episode, she went to the house of Om Prakash, but only to discover that he had left it. She went to Badsi village, but was shooed away by the accused.

Following this, Devi approached the district administration and the local police authorities through a lawyer. Taking cognisance of the matter, a police party was dispatched to the village.

Devi said the police rescued her daughter from the clutches of the accused. The girl remained in police custody for a few days, after which she was sent to her mother’s place. A medical examination of the girl would be carried out.

The girl and her daughter today lodged a complaint with the Inspector-General of Police (Hisar range), Mr Resham Singh. Devi alleged that they were still receiving threats by the accused to withdraw the complaint. Nonetheless, the brave girl and her hapless mother were determined to pursue their case and hoped that they would get justice.

Neighbour booked for attempt to sell girl
    Kulwinder Sandhu
    Tribune News Service

    Karnal, January 7
A case of selling a 16-year-old teenager girl has come to light at Karnal, the FIR of which was registered by the police against her neighbour woman and two of her associates after preliminary investigation last evening. However, the police was yet to arrest the alleged criminals when the report was last written.

Revealing this to The Tribune, the investigation officer, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Pawan Kumar, said the teenaged girl Jyoti, daughter of Kulwant Singh of Ram Nagar, was taken to the local market by her neighbour Ramesh Devi on the pretext of shopping on the evening of December 29.

Later, the woman took Jyoti to the Atal Park in Sector-9 where two unidentified persons were already waiting for them in a Maruti car. The woman and the girl sat together in the car so that they could be dropped at their residence in Ram Nagar.

However, on the way, Ramesh Devi took Rs 1,000 from these two persons in the name of shopping and got down from the car, saying that she was going to the market and would get late.

She asked Jyoti to go along with them to the house. However, the girl refused to go along with the strangers alone but the woman convinced her that they were well known to her. Believing her neighbourer, she agreed upon to go with them alone.

Meanwhile, the driver stopped the car in front of the local vegetable market and got out of the car to purchase something. The other man sitting with her in the car started molesting her.

Realising bad intentions of the person, Jyoti cried for help and managed to escape. She immediately rushed to a nearby shop for help. The shopkeeper, with the help of assistants, tried to nab the alleged culprits but they fled away from the spot.

Later, the shop owner took Jyoti to her home. Her family members later brought the matter to the notice of the police.

The investigation officer conducted a preliminary inquiry into the incident after recording the statements of the victim and her family members. After the investigation into the incident a prima facie case was established and accordingly an FIR was registered against Ramesh Devi and her two accomplices under Sections 363, 366, 342, 354, 372 and 120B of the IPC last evening.
